The students were split into teams, each given a specific role to play , Construction Manager, Quantity Surveyor, Planner, Environmentalist, Designer and Estimator roles - vital, yet perhaps 'unseen' pre-commencement roles of the industry.
The challenge comprised of a progressive set of tasks and activities i.e:
The sponsor's Training Manager said "This activity brings to the classroom a practical 'real life' perspective to the mathematics taught in schools. In addition it highlights the importance of teamwork, time management, organisational and presentation skills - key attributes for the world of work."
The business agenda reached a fever pitch when the Tender documents had to be handed in with a deadline before lunch [true to life in the construction world].
Presentations were given a twist by the business; as sponsor staff allowed the group to present, but interjected with pertinent questions and asked the teams to quantify 'why', 'how', 'when' their specific tender/s would meet the clients' requirements...
Comment from a Crestwood teacher "The day was absolutely fantastic for a number of reasons:fast-paced enterprise challenge for students at Crestwood School; the students were in mixed ability groups and worked with unfamiliar faces; great communication and team building skills were learnt; the explanation of Maths into relevant words - always a difficult thing to do. The resources were of a high standard and the students responded in a highly positive way and reacted in a professional manner."
Comment from a Redhill teacher "The pupils were engaged and involved in all aspects for the entire day - that alone is a tremendous achievement. Staff and students were able to make links between our curriculum and industry which will strengthen pupils' understanding and interest".
Student comments:
"I really enjoyed figuring out the construction costs and managing our money."
"I have been given an insight into how this industry works - it is not easy and requires full concentration."
"Today, I was really proud of thinking up new ideas - because I normally think 'inside' the box. I was able to answer the panel's questions; my team were really pleased with that!"
